The Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (RJOS) is pleased to offer the following scholarship, grant, and fellowship opportunities in 2023. RJOS extends our sincere thanks to Zimmer Biomet for their ongoing exclusive support of many of the scholarships and grants offered to RJOS members. RJOS also extends a special thank you to those organizations and individuals who have provided funding for new scholarship opportunities. Our generous contributors are recognized with each award.
The application deadline for all scholarships and grants is 11:59 p.m. CT on Friday, August 12, 2022.
Please note the following applies to all scholarships, grants and fellowships offered by RJOS:
- Only RJOS members in good standing are eligible to receive a scholarship, grant, or fellowship**
- Any RJOS member in good standing can apply for any award(s) for which they are eligible
- No member is eligible to receive more than one scholarship, grant or fellowship, whether from RJOS, another society, institution, or any other source, in any given year
- The 2023 RJOS Annual Member Meeting will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada on Tuesday, March 7, 2023. The dollar amount of the Medical Student Annual Meeting Scholarships, Resident Annual Meeting Scholarships, Julie and Quincy Samora Resident Scholarship, Grace Marlene DeMaio Memorial Medical Student Scholarship and The Perry Initiative Medical Student Scholarships will be adjusted accordingly to exclude travel expenses for any medical student or resident scholarship recipient residing in, attending school, or working in Las Vegas or the immediate proximity. The amount of each scholarship will be provided in the recipient’s notification letter.
- All recipients are required to attend the RJOS Annual Member Meeting to receive their award and check
- Members of the Scientific, Professional Development, and Membership Committees are not eligible to apply for a scholarship, grant, or fellowship that is being reviewed by their respective committee
- A member cannot apply for an award they have already received within the past five years

2023 RJOS Scholarships, Grants and Fellowships
- RJOS/Zimmer Biomet Clinical/Basic Science Research Grant - Sponsored exclusively by Zimmer Biomet
- This grant is open to Active and Candidate members of RJOS in good standing who are Board Certified or Board eligible.
- Provides seed/start-up funding for promising clinical or basic science research projects. Preference will be given to topics related to women's musculoskeletal health issues. The review criteria for applications include the project’s significance, its investigator(s), its innovation, its approach, the environment, and its budget. The recipient will receive a maximum of $30,000.00. Recipient will present a poster during the 2024 RJOS Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA.
- Attendance at the 2023 RJOS Annual Meeting and Business Meeting in Las Vegas, NV on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, is required.

- Alexandra Kirkley MD Academic Traveling Fellowship – Sponsored exclusively by Zimmer Biomet
- This Fellowship is open to Active, Candidate and Fellow members of RJOS in good standing.
- Allows orthopaedic physicians to travel to enrich their academic careers. The Fellowship award is contingent upon submitted travel, room, and board receipts, not to exceed $5,000. All travel and expenses must be in compliance with the RJOS Travel Policy. Travel must be completed by June 30, 2023, and the final report, with expenses, must be submitted no later than July 15, 2023. The recipient will present a five-minute presentation regarding your fellowship experience at the 2024 RJOS Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA.
- Attendance at the RJOS 2023 Annual Meeting and Business Meeting in Las Vegas, NV on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, is required.
- A letter of recommendation and current CV are required with the application

- Jacquelin Perry, MD Resident Research Grant – Sponsored exclusively by Zimmer Biomet
- This grant is open to RJOS resident members in good standing who are currently enrolled in an accredited orthopaedic surgical residency program. (The resident applicant must be the primary investigator.)
- Encourages orthopaedic residents to submit abstracts of clinical and basic science research projects. The grant is awarded to assist the recipient with their travel expenses associated with RJOS Annual Meeting attendance. Recipient will present a poster of their work during the 2023 RJOS Annual Meeting and Business Meeting.
- Attendance at the RJOS 2023 Annual Meeting and Business Meeting in Las Vegas, NV on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, is required.
- A letter of recommendation and a current CV are required with the application

- Resident Annual Meeting Scholarship – Sponsored exclusively by Zimmer Biomet
- This scholarship is open to RJOS resident members in good standing who are currently enrolled in an accredited orthopaedic surgical residency program.
- Allows orthopaedic residents to attend the RJOS 2023 Annual Meeting and Business Meeting in Las Vegas, NV on Tuesday, March 7, 2023. Recipients are selected based on academic achievements and leadership. The scholarship is awarded to assist the recipient with their travel expenses associated with RJOS and AAOS Annual Meeting attendance. Recipients also receive a RJOS member mentor.
- Attendance at the RJOS 2023 Annual Meeting and Business Meeting in Las Vegas, NV on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, is required.
- A letter of recommendation and current CV are required with the application

- This scholarship is open to RJOS student members in good standing who are currently enrolled in a medical school program.
- Allows medical students to attend the RJOS 2023 Annual Meeting and Business Meeting to learn more about the field of orthopaedic surgery. Recipients are selected based on achievements in academics, leadership, mentoring and community service/volunteerism. The scholarship is awarded to assist the recipient with their travel expenses associated with RJOS and AAOS Annual Meeting.
- Attendance at the RJOS 2023 Annual Meeting and Business Meeting in Las Vegas, NV on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, is required.
- A letter of recommendation and current CV are required with the application

- Allows one Resident to attend the RJOS 2023 Annual Meeting and Business Meeting to learn more about the field of orthopaedic surgery. The scholarship is awarded to assist the recipient with their travel expenses associated with RJOS and AAOS Annual Meeting.

- Allows one medical student to attend the RJOS 2023 Annual Meeting and Business Meeting to learn more about the field of orthopaedic surgery. The scholarship is awarded to assist the recipient with their travel expenses associated with RJOS and AAOS Annual Meeting.

- This grant is open to RJOS student members (3rd and 4th year only) in good standing who are currently enrolled in a medical school program.
- Allows 3rd and 4th year medical students to attend the RJOS 2023 Annual Meeting and Business Meeting to learn more about the field of orthopaedic surgery. The scholarship is awarded to assist the recipient with their travel expenses associated with RJOS and AAOS Annual Meeting.
- Attendance at the RJOS 2023 Annual Meeting and Business Meeting in Las Vegas, NV on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, is required.
- A letter of recommendation, current CV and STEP 1 scores are required with the application

- Attendance at the RJOS 2023 Annual Meeting and Business Meeting in Las Vegas, NV on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, is required.
